Coachella

The Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival is one of the world’s biggest and most popular annual art and music festivals. It has seven performance stages and even though there is not much seating, laying back in the grass is always an option. People wear the cutting edge of fashion, starting trends and trying out the newest looks. Known for its laidback, boho-chic vibe, it takes place in Indio, California each year.

It generally takes place in April, however, the 2020 festival has been canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic affecting the United States (and the whole world). California was especially hard hit by the virus so far, so the organizers of the festival felt it was best to reschedule it.

Stage Coach

Stage Coach is a giant outdoor country music specific festival attended by thousands (in 2018 it had about 75,000 attendees!). People show off their pride for the USA of A, dig out their western gear, and drink plenty of Budweiser (one of the official sponsors of the festival). It happens to take place on the same grounds as the Coachella Festival in Indio, California but they do not take place at the same time, nor do they cater to quote the same tastes.

Stage Coach generally happens in late April or early May but it too was rescheduled for the Fall after the recent coronavirus outbreak.

“Coachella will now take place on October 9, 10 and 11 and October 16, 17 and 18, 2020,” Goldenvoice, the AEG subsidiary that organizes the festivals, said in its statement. “Stagecoach will take place on October 23, 24 and 25, 2020. All purchases for the April dates will be honored for the rescheduled October dates. Purchasers will be notified by Friday, March 13 on how to obtain a refund if they are unable to attend. Thank you for your continued support and we look forward to seeing you in the desert this fall.”

Ultra Music Festival

Usually, the Ultra Music Festival would be earlier up on this list as it generally takes place in mid-March of each year in Miami, FL. However, this year’s concert was canceled until March of next year due to the coronavirus outbreak. The mayor of Miami was diagnosed with COVID-19, just one famous case among many others in the Miami area. It was the first major music festival in the US to be canceled over coronavirus fears.

When the festival actually does happen, it is an electronic music festival with huge attendance—in recent years, attendance has plateaued around 165,000 people coming each year. The festival, the entertainers that perform, and the music that plays are just as edgy and cool as the city of Miami is itself. Electronic music has its own kind of hypnotic vibe and festival-goers get really into the music festival culture.

Burning Man

The Burning Man Festival has become especially hot in recent years. An annual event since 1986, this festival is about more than just music. It celebrates art, free expression, counterculture, and identity. People attend the festival to let loose and release their inhibitions, allowing themselves to be revel in the true selves beyond society’s dictates before returning back to everyday life.

One of the biggest draws of the festival (and the source of its name) is the fact that a giant wooden effigy is burned in a giant bonfire as the festival’s culmination. After which, attendees completely clean the grounds, leaving it spic and span, as though no one had ever been there.

It takes place in August each year so if you can make it out there before the fall semester starts, then you should!

There are many other hot music festivals you can look into, like Outside Lands and Bonnaroo. If the types of music or art in the featured festivals do not tickle your fancy, you will definitely be able to find one that will, specific to your tastes, preferences, and availability to travel.

Music festivals are a great way to come together and celebrate art, music, love, and life all at once, so if you have an opportunity to attend, you should experience one at least once!
